- The speed and direction of a sailing ship is controlled by the number of sails raised on each mast, the angle of the sails to the wind (trim), and the position of the rudder. if a sheet (line used to control a square-sail) has broken or been released, it is said to be “in the wind.” it is extremely difficult to manage even a single sail thrashing wildly with its control ropes blowing about in a strong wind. with sheets on all three masts in this condition, the ship is essentially out of control. hence this phrase— first recorded in richard henry dana’s 1840 book two years before the mast—has come to mean being too intoxicated to know what one is doing. much less frequently “one sheet to the wind” is used to indicate slight inebriation.
