Running rigging

Глоссарий морских терминов (рангоут, такелаж, устройство судна)
  1. Rigging used to manipulate sails, spars, etc. in order to control the movement of the ship. cf. standing rigging.

  2. Бегучий такелаж

  3. Фордевинд - курс яхты относительно ветра, когда направление ветра практически совпадает с направлением движения яхты (ветер дует строго в корму или, иначе, угол ветра к диаметральной плоскости яхты составляет 180 градусов)

  4. Consists of ropes and lines rove through blocks and used to manipulate spars and sails. it may be divided into those used to control the sails (tacks, cunninghams and sheets) and those which raise rum 270 and lower (jeers, lifts, downhauls, and halyards). one end is fastened and known as the standing part. the other is loose end and known as the fall. square-rigged ships have lifts that control the foreand- aft angle of yards; and braces which adjust their up-and-down angle. braces demand large hauling crews because, although they carry heavy loads, their controlling tackles have too few blocks to give them adequate mechanical advantage. (see also rig, rigging, standing rigging.)

Standing rigging, английский
  1. Rigging which is used to support masts and spars, and is not normally manipulated during normal operations. cf. running rigging.

  2. Стоячий такелаж

  3. Стоячий такелаж - совокупность снастей, крепящих рангоут в рабочем положении

  4. That part which is made fast, and not hauled upon; being the shrouds, backstays, and stays for the support of the masts.

  5. Consists of permanently-secured heavy lines that are adjusted and made fast to support the masts from forward and aft (stays), and athwartships (shrouds). the system depends on achieving a delicate balance between pull and counterpull. for example, tightening a backstay might bend the mast in a slight curve towards the stern. this could be compensated by increasing tension on a forestay, but that might slacken the port and starboard shrouds which would have to be tightened equally to re-balance them. when the entire system has been tuned and is in equilibrium, lines and tackles can be permanently fixed in position and the excess ends cut off. the shrouds are crossed horizontally by ratlines that provide topmen with a means of going aloft. when they get there, the yards are equipped with loops, called foot-ropes or horses, on which they can stand while handling sails. standing rigging is usually protected with pitch giving it a black look which distinguishes it from lighter colored running rigging which is left naked for flexibility.

Chock-a-block, английский
Rigging blocks that are so tight against one another that they cannot be further tightened.
