    1. To go fast, usually referring to vehicular travel. first noticed in the movie _ronin_. example a. what kind of car do we need? b. i dunno. an audi a4, or a perhaps a quattro. something that can shovel.

    2. A copper implement for removing a cartridge from a gun without injuring it. formerly used, and as late as 1816 by the turks, to convey the powder into the chamber without using cartridges: also used to withdraw shot where windage was large. (see ladle.)

    3. In former naval use: [1] a copper implement for removing the charge from a smoothbore muzzle-loading cannon without damaging the cartridge. [2] to use such an implement. show a leg!: in sailing ship navies, shore leave was severely restricted for fear of desertion, so it was not unusual to allow women to visit husbands, sweethearts, or clients in their quarters. from time to time some of these “wives” would contrive to remain on board when the ship sailed, often with the tacit connivance of captain or officers, because women were useful for sewing, darning, and tending the wounded. hence it became the practice, when rousting out the watch below, to order a leg to be hung or waved over the side of the hammock. if it was smooth and female, its owner was allowed to sleep on in peace. if male and hairy, he was unceremoniously tipped out to run topside for duty. (also shake a leg.)
