A frigate-type vessel intended for inshore operations in support of intelligence, reconnaissance, anti-terrorism, interception, and special forces missions. in these roles it sacrifices air defense and surface-to-surface capabilities in favor of speed and shallow draft. however, it can be rapidly reconfigured for other roles such as antisubmarine warfare, mine countermeasures, and surface warfare by changing “mission modules” that can be moved on or off the ship in standard shipping containers. the lcs can carry a number of unmanned surface vessels.
