- A fitting through which anchor or mooring lines are led. usually u-shaped to reduce chafe.
- Hole or ring attached to the hull to guide a line via that point. an opening in a ships bulwark normally oval in shape designed to allow mooring lines to be fastened to cleats or bits mounted to the ship`s deck. see also panama chock and dutchman`s chock.

(see boat-chocks.)—chock of the bowsprit. see bend.—chocks of the rudder, large accurately adapted pieces of timber kept in readiness to choak the rudder, by filling up the excavation on the side of the rudder hole, in case of any accident. it is also choaked or chocked, when a ship is likely to get strong stern-way, when tiller-ropes break, &c.—to chock, is to put a wedge under anything to prevent its rolling.
