  1. The united states navy term for a smaller, lightly armed warship built in large numbers during world war ii (and ins smaller numbers thereafter), cheaper, slower, and less-well-armed than a destroyer but larger and more heavily armed than a corvette and designed to escort convoys of merchant ships or naval auxiliaries or second-line naval forces. employed primarily for anti-submarine warfare, but also provided some protection against aircraft and smaller surface ships. generally known as "frigates" in other navies, and designated as such in the u.s. navy as well by the 1970s.
