  2. A numerical or written representation of the roughness of the ocean surface, categorizing the force of progressively higher seas by wave characteristics, and the relationship of wind to waves. the large number of variables involved cannot be quickly and easily summarized, so simpler scales are used to give concise, approximate, descriptions, primarily for reporting in a ship’s log or similar record. see beaufort scale, douglas scale, and tables 1–5.
