Slop chest

Глоссарий морских терминов (рангоут, такелаж, устройство судна)
  1. A ship`s store of merchandise, such as clothing, tobacco, etc., maintained aboard merchant ships for sale to the crew.

  2. [1] originally a ship’s compartment for storing clothing, bedding and personal items for issue or sale to naval or merchant seamen. in the seventeenth century, impressed seamen had only the clothes they were wearing at the time of seizure, while vagabonds and felons often came aboard in disgusting rags. in 1623, the navy slop office was established to provide “clothinge to avoyde nastie beastliness by diseases and unwholsomme ill smells in everye ship.” [2] today, the slop chest has evolved into an on board commissary or retail store for the same purpose. goods are duty free, so the chest is locked before coming into port. navigation laws of the united states (title 46:11103) allow a 10 percent mark-up and require every merchant vessel to be: ... provided with a slop chest which shall contain a complement of clothing for the intended voyage for each seaman employed, including boots or shoes, hats or caps, under clothing and outer clothing, oiled clothing, and everything necessary for the wear of a seaman; also a full supply of tobacco and blankets.
