Holystone

Глоссарий морских терминов (рангоут, такелаж, устройство судна)
  1. A chunk of sandstone used to scrub the decks. the name comes from both the kneeling position sailors adopt to scrub the deck (reminiscent of genuflection for prayer), and the stone itself (which resembled a bible in shape and size).

  2. [1] wooden decks were cleaned by scrubbing with sandstone blocks which were popularly believed to have been named holy because they brought seamen to their knees. in fact they were called holey because they are full of cavities. seamen called the bigger blocks bibles and the little ones, used to scrub narrow spaces, prayer-books. [2] to scour the deck with such a stone.

Genuflection, английский

Merchant mariner, английский
  1. A civilian officer or sailor who serves in the merchant marine (q.v.). sometimes such personnel are incorrectly called "merchant marines," but both merchant mariners and marines frown on this term; although merchant mariners are part of the merchant marine, they are civilians and are not in any way marines (q.v.), which are a specialized type of military personnel .

  2. A member of a merchantman’s crew. it is little appreciated that merchant mariner was one of the most hazardous occupations in world war ii. although technically non-combatant, the u.s. merchant marine and british merchant navy each suffered a higher overall casualty rate than their respective armies, navies, and air forces.

Tye, английский
