Hawser, английский
- A heavy line or cable used for towing, mooring or anchoring.
- Large rope used for mooring or towing a vessel.
- Large strong rope used for towing purposes and for securing or mooring ships. hawsers are now mostly made of steel.

- A large rope or cablet, which holds the middle degree between the cable and tow-line, being a size smaller than the former, and as much larger than the latter; curiously, it is not hawser but cable laid.
- Heavy rope (nowadays usually steel) for warping, mooring, or towing. made of three hawserlaid ropes, laid up in the opposite direction to their own lay so that they form a “cable-laid,” or “waterlaid” rope. since virtually all hawser-laid ropes are made-up right-handed (“with the sun”), most cablelaid hawsers will be left-handed (“against the sun”) but not by definition. originally called “haulser.” hawser-laid: rope made of three strands which are almost always made up right-handed, although left-handed is sometimes encountered.
