Red tide

Fisheries glossary
  1. Discolouration of surface waters, most frequently in coastal zones, caused by large concentrations of micro-organisms. see harmful algal bloom.

  2. The common name for algal bloom, a phenomenon in which photosynthetic algae thrive and multiply in response to increased intensity of light, plus favorable levels of salinity and nutrients in ocean water. during the growth period (or bloom) each cell may replicate itself a million times in matter of days, to accumulate in dense, visible clumps of algae seeking sunlight. the surface may turn pink, violet, orange, yellow, blue, green, or brown, but red is the most common pigment, giving the phenomenon its name. cf. plankton bloom.

Tide, английский
  1. The periodic rise and fall of water level in the oceans.

  2. The periodic rise and fall of water level in the oceans

  3. Прилив и отлив (на море, океане)

  4. Прилив

  5. The rise and fall of water level due to the gravitational effects of the sun and the moon.

  6. Приливно-отливные явления

  7. A regular periodical current of waters, setting alternately in a flux and reflux; it is owing to the attraction of the sun and moon, but chiefly to the latter. the highest as well as most rapid, perhaps, are in the gulf of fundy and the river wye; and on the contrary the lowest, as well as feeblest, are in the mediterranean generally.—to tide, is to work up or down a river or harbour, with a fair tide in a head wind or a calm; coming to anchor when the tide turns.

  8. The cyclical rise and fall of sea level that oc- throw 324 curs roughly every twelve hours (from old english tid = time). these are of great importance to navigation, since significant errors in position will occur if they are not taken into account. tidal range and height are also important, because many rivers and harbors have shallow bars that prevent vessels with significant draft from entering at certain states of the tidal cycle. see also tide creation.

  9. The predictable, regular rising and lowering of water in some areas due to the pull of the sun and the moon. tidal changes can happen approximately every six or 12 hours, depending on the region. to find the time and water levels of different tides, you can use tide tables for your area. the period of high water level is known as high tide, and the period of low water level is known as low tide.

  10. Tactical and ifps development environment

Tide creation, английский
All surfaces of the earth are pulled toward the moon and sun by gravitational attraction. this has minor effect on solid land masses, but exerts great and obvious influence on the fluid oceans. moon gravity pulls upwards on the water, while the stronger force of earth gravity simultaneously pulls downward. the sun’s gravity also has an impact, but its gravitational force on the earth is less than half that of the moon, making the latter the predominant factor in tide creation. as the moon rotates around the earth, it pulls the water on the nearest side of the earth outward into a bulge. a similar bulge on the opposite side of the earth is caused by the water being thrown outward by the centrifugal force of the planet’s spin. these two bulges travel around the globe as tidal waves, producing diurnal high tides (two each day). when the sun>earth>moon line is straight (at new moon and full moon) their gravitational pulls combine to produce higher high tides and lower low tides, known as spring tides. when sun and moon are at right angles from the earth (during the quarter phases of the moon) the gravitational pull on the oceans is less, producing a smaller range between high and low water, known as neap tides. there is about a seven day interval between springs and neaps. tides also occur at slightly different times from one day to another, due to shifts in the relative orbits of earth, moon, and sun. northern california has two unequal tides each day, while the gulf of mexico experiences only one high and one low tide each day.

Tide cycle, английский
