- The common name for algal bloom, a phenomenon in which photosynthetic algae thrive and multiply in response to increased intensity of light, plus favorable levels of salinity and nutrients in ocean water. during the growth period (or bloom) each cell may replicate itself a million times in matter of days, to accumulate in dense, visible clumps of algae seeking sunlight. the surface may turn pink, violet, orange, yellow, blue, green, or brown, but red is the most common pigment, giving the phenomenon its name. cf. plankton bloom.
