- 1. same as macule 2. a small coloured area, e.g. a macula lutea 3. an area of hair cells inside the utricle and saccule of the ear (note: the plural is maculae.)
- The small, sensitive area of the central retina; the macula is responsible for good visual acuity, color vision, and central vision.
