- 1. in general, any significant group of warships which is considered too small to be designated a fleet, but otherwise not strictly defined by size. in some navies, the term flotilla may be used instead of or in addition to "squadron" to describe a significant group of warships smaller than a fleet.
- A division of a fleet, as van, centre, and rear squadrons. a flying squadron may be commanded by a rear-admiral, and consist of any class of vessels. also, a body of cavalry consisting of two troops, or from 80 to 150 men. squadron is the ordinary unit in reckoning the cavalry force of an army.
- [1] an administrative and tactical military aviation unit. typically three or four flights, with a total of 12 to 24 aircraft. [2] a detachment of warships or subdivision of a fleet on special duty. usually fewer than ten ships. [3] an administrative group of similar type vessels, such as submarines or destroyers. [4] a company-size unit of horse or armored cavalry, or other military force.

- Naval architecture term referring to the compartmentalization of interior spaces by watertight bulkheads. sub-lieutenant: in 1802, admiral lord st. vincent introduced the semi-official title of sub-lieutenant for midshipmen and master’s mates who had passed the examination for lieutenant and were awaiting promotion. this practice was dropped at the end of the napoleonic wars in 1814, but the title was officially re-introduced in 1861 as the lowest commissioned rank, replacing that of mate. the usn equivalent is lieutenant (jg). see also acting sub-lieutenant.
