Англо-грузинский словарь

    Commander, английский
    1. Командующий; командир

    2. Командир; командующий; начальник

    3. An officer in the royal navy, commanding a ship of war of under twenty guns, a sloop of war, armed ship, or bomb-vessel. he was entitled master and commander, and ranked with a major of the army: now simply termed commander, and ranking with lieutenant-colonel, but junior of that rank. the act of the commander is binding upon the interests of all under him, and he is alone responsible for costs and damages: he may act erroneously, and abandon what might have turned out good prize to himself and crew.—commander is also the name of a large wooden mallet used specially in the sail and rigging lofts, as anything of metal would injure the ropes or canvas.

    4. [1] a person who exercises authority. [2] the officer in tactical command (otc) of a group 77 commander of specifically designated warships. [3] a naval rank instituted by the royal navy in 1814 to replace the former master and commander and then achievable only by being appointed to the command of a vessel smaller than a post-ship but larger than a lieutenant’s command. it soon became an essential stepping stone to post-captain. in 1827, the first lieutenants (seconds-incommand) of battleships were also made commanders. [4] a naval rank instituted by the united states navy in 1837 to replace the former master commandant (table 15). today, commanders rank below captain and above lieutenant-commander.
