- See cqr anchor. plow-steel: a high-strength steel, with a carbon content of 0.5 to 0.95 percent, used originally to make the line used to attach a plow to a steam engine, and still the preferred metal for making wire rope. the three primary grades are: • mild: can stand repeated strain and stress and has a tensile strength of 200,000 to 220,000 psi (214– 235 kg/cm2). it is used for cable drilling and other jobs where abrasion is a factor, but seldom in marine applications. • regular: is tough and strong with a tensile strength of 220–240,000 psi (235–257 kg/cm2). it is used for hauling and hoisting cargo. • improved: is the best wire rope for towing hawsers and is regularly used by naval construction forces. it is stronger, tougher, and more wear-resistant than the other types and can stand strains of 240– 260,000 psi (257–278 kg/cm2).
