To protect a ship and place it in reserve (cf. in ordinary, deactivate, inactivate). mother carey’s chickens: the seaman’s name for stormy petrels. seafaring tradition holds it extremely unlucky to kill one since each bird is thought to carry the soul of a dead sailor on his way to fiddler’s green. (there is a similar belief concerning the albatross, another member of the petrel family.) the superstition is clearly described in chapter 41 of captain marryatt’s book poor jack, which tells of a schooner en route to antigua but becalmed near the virgin islands. on board were a young man called shedden and etau, a female obi (powerful sorcerer). some stormy petrels were flying about the stern and... ... shedden must needs get at his gun to shoot them.... “there are three down!” cried out some of the other passengers. “how many?” said the old woman, “then count the sharks which are coming up.” “count the sharks, mother! why count them? there’s plenty of them” replied shedden, laughing. “i tell you that there will be but three sent,” replied the old woman who then sunk down her head and said no more.... in about ten minutes afterwards, three large sharks swam up to the vessel, with their fins above water.... “then three are doomed,” said the old woman, “and here we stay, and the waves shall not run, nor the wind blow, till the three sharks have their food. i say three are doomed!” next morning ... the three large sharks were still slowly swimming round and round the schooner. all that day it remained a dead calm, and the heat was dreadful, and the people, becoming more frightened, questioned old etau, but all the answer she gave was, “three are doomed!”... that night, shedden developed yellow fever, joined shortly afterwards by a sailor and a african slave. no one else was taken ill. shedden jumped overboard and next morning one of the predators had disappeared. then the sailor died and another shark vanished after his body was committed to the deep. finally the slave died and was carried off by the third shark... ... old etau cried out, “three! the price is paid!” ... every one crowded round the old woman ... and they asked her ... whether they should have any wind? and her reply was, “when the three birds come from the sea to replace those which were killed....” well, after a time, although we never saw them rise, three mother carey’s chickens were seen dipping and flying about astern of the schooner; and they told old etau, who said, “now you’ll have wind ... and plenty of waves to make up for the calm” and so they had, sure enough, for it came on almost a hurricane, and the schooner scudded before it under bare poles until she arrived at antigua.
