R. brooks, at mit, developed subsumption architecture as a novel approach to robotics control. rather than have a central control controlling each action in detail, this architecture takes a bottom-up approach, building very small control units that have a defined reflex cycle, and combines these together in a layered hierarchy. each behavior is modeled by a finite-state matchine with only a few states. this approach has been successful at developing robots that exhibit insect level intelligence.

Quasi-bayesian methods for representing and manipulating uncertainty extend the notion of a probability distribution to represent uncertainty about a set of propositions using a set of distributions. because of the nature of these operations, this set is often extended to include the convex set enclosing the set of distributions (e.g., all mixtures of the original distributions). this convex set is called the credal set. see also: quasi-bayesian theory.
