Wave formation, английский
The friction of wind blowing across the surface causes particles of water to oscillate up and down in a rotary fashion, moving forward at the crest and backward in the trough. the result is that the wave-form moves across the surface of the water, while the water molecules themselves simply rise and fall, staying in almost the same position except for surface drift. wave size is proportional to wind speed: • a puff of wind (beaufort 1) has very little grip on calm water (beaufort 0). • as it gets stronger it begins to make the surface move, forming small eddies and ripples at 70° to 80°angles to the wind direction. • the ripples roughen the water, offering more surface area for the wind to work on until, a light breeze (beaufort 2) produces small wavelets at about 30° from the wind. • as the breeze freshens to moderate (beaufort 3) the wavelets travel parallel to the wind direction, become choppy, and begin to break. the surface no watertender 354 longer looks smooth and presents enough wind resistance to create turbulence, a condition that facilitates and accelerates wave formation. • as wind speed continues to rise, wave size and fury also increase, reaching 14 meters (46 feet) or more by beaufort 12. see also measurement of wind and wave, wave characteristics, and wave motion.

Wave combination, английский
There are statistics that give some support to the old rule of thumb about every seventh wave being a big one. being caused by winds of varying strength, waves are of varying sizes and travel at different speeds. over the open sea, faster moving waves catch up with slower ones, combining to produce a larger wave. moreover, wind waves are often superimposed on swell and the combination can be critically important to cargo vessels, causing deck cargo to be washed overboard or bulk cargo to shift dangerously.
