A tool used to aim naval cannon. to train the weapon, a trailspike was inserted between gun carriage and deck as a lever to lift the carriage so that it could be inched to one side or the other. to control elevation, a trailspike on one of the carriage steps could lever the barrel off its quoins for re-positioning; but this was seldom required at sea where it total 330 was a matter of gauging the right moment to fire as the ship rolled.
