  6. Точка отсчета

  8. (1) a material unit representing information about a portion of the real world that can be processed by explicit procedures and maintains its characteristics during repeated use. (2) a fact or figure transcribed in a readable language and on a durable medium (->channel). e.g., a completed questionaire, a taped interview, the recorded results of an experiment. events that leave no physical marks cannot be traced through data and physical marks that can no longer be interpreted, e.g., because the code linking them to particular observations is unavailable, loose the status of data. a datum rarely stands alone, hence the common use of its plural data. science typically processes large collections of data. in statistics each datum of a collection must contain the same kind of information.

Tidal bore, английский
  1. Generated in estuaries and rivers with high tidal range and a sharp narrowing and shoaling at the entrance. manifested as a single wave, which may be breaking, that travels along the river or estuary and is followed by a rise in water level. see also bore.

  2. A phenomenon generated when the leading edge of a rising tide rides over the top of an outflowing river current and moves upstream in the form of a wave. this makes it a true tidal wave (not to be confused with tsunami). these phenomena are relatively rare, occurring only in a few locations where large incoming tides are funneled into a shallow narrowing river via a broad bay. the biggest in north america occurs in the otherwise lazy shubenacadie river, off the bay of fundy where the tidal range is about 12 meters (40 feet). the shubenacadie bore races upstream at a speed as high as 50 km/h (30 mph) and can rise to a height of 5 meters (16 feet) but is usually less. it has claimed the lives of several tourists who were in the riverbed when it came in. the word derives from old norse bara, meaning wave or swell. (also eagre.)

Tidal day, английский
