Humanitarian emblems, английский
The geneva conventions recognize several emblems to be displayed by humanitarian and medical ships, vehicles, and buildings, to protect them from military attack. • the red cross, adopted in 1864, is simply a reverse image of the flag of historically neutral switzerland, originally intended to be a unique, universal, and easily recognizable symbol, free from political or a religious connotations. • unfortunately, muslims objected to an emblem that reminded them of crusaders, giving rise to the 1929 adoption of the red crescent as a recognized alternative. • then in december 2005, the third protocol emblem (diamond-shaped and commonly known as the “red crystal”) was adopted for use by cultures wishing to avoid the implied religious connotation of the first two. no country or society is obliged to use the new emblem; but all are required to respect it in the same manner as the other emblems. • because the mogen david (solomon’s seal: a sixpointed star formed from two equilateral triangles) is not recognized outside israel, that country ensures international protection by using the red crystal, either alone, or surrounding a red mogen david. • the red lion and sun emblem of iran is also recognized by the geneva conventions, but is no longer in use, having been discontinued by the islamic republic in 1980.
