This system consists of a u-shaped tank, partially filled with water, located above the ship’s centre of gravity and running transversely from port to starboard. it is designed so that the natural period of sloshing is approximately equal to the ship’s natural period of oscillation. roll of the vessel is thus transferred to the water which dissipates it—provided the water’s frequency of motion harmonizes with the frequency of the exciting waves. at inharmonious frequencies a tank stabilizer can actually increase roll.
