To provide a guard of honor, the officer of the day or watch assembles the quartermaster, corporal of the watch, side boys, and quarterdeck messengers at the gangway to greet or say farewell to a visiting officer or dignitary. also known as tend the side (usn) or man the side (rn), and see side honors.

[4] today, a united states navy quartermaster is a senior or chief petty officer who specializes in navigation and is familiar with electronic aids as well as conventional navigational instruments. the quartermaster of the watch maintains a dead reckoning of the ship’s position and projected path, plots them on the chart, and maintains the ship’s deck log. reporting to the navigator, he or she supervises and administers the work of the ship’s quartermaster force, and is sometimes responsible for supervising its signal force as well. [5] in the royal navy and in merchant service, quartermaster is not a rate but a duty for (usually) a senior ab or leading seaman. in harbor the qm stands gangway watch with a bos’n’s mate, and at sea is the senior hand in the wheelhouse steering position.
