[4] a suspension wire (e.g., for hanging seabags). see also highline. jacob’s ladder: slang for a wooden-runged rope ladder. slung over the side or from a mast for temporary use, it is awkward and difficult to ascend and appears interminable to a climber, hence the reference to the old testament ladder which rose all the way from earth to heaven (gen.28:12).
