A form of time series analysis that treats the observed sequence of events or measurements as being analogous to a radio or similar signal. the signal is assumed to be a mix of "pure" signals at various frequencies and the model estimates the power (amplitude) at the various frequencies. typically the signals are represented by a fourier series, a mixture of sine and cosine functions. other basis functions can also be used, such as hadamard functions (which take on values of 1 and -1) or wavelets. see also: time series analysis, box-jenkins analysis.
