Escort carrier, английский
  1. An aircraft carrier, smaller and slower than a fleet carrier, used by some navies in world war ii to escort convoys, ferry aircraft, and provide air support for amphibious operations.

  2. Towards the middle of world war ii, the large and expensive fleet carriers were supplemented by small versions built on merchantman hulls as an emergency response to the inability of landbased aircraft to patrol or attack u-boats in mid–atlantic. in the words of british naval aviator hugh popham, they were “unlovable little ships, slow (17 knots), jerry-built, utilitarian, and vulnerable, but the amount of work they did was prodigious.” as well as being highly successful convoy escorts, “baby flattops,” as they were nicknamed, proved invaluable as assault carriers to support amphibious operations, ferried replacement aircraft to theaters of war, and supplemented full-size carriers in combat. seventy-seven were used by the usn and another thirty-three were leased to the rn and rcn. also jeep carrier (cf. fleet carrier, light fleet carrier, and mac-ship).
