Booby, английский
  1. A type of bird that has little fear and therefore is particularly easy to catch.

  2. A well-known tropical sea-bird, sula fusca, of the family pelecanid?. it is fond of resting out of the water at night, even preferring an unstable perch on the yard of a ship. the name is derived from the way in which it allows itself to be caught immediately after settling. the direction in which they fly as evening comes on often shows where land may be found.

  3. This tropical sea bird liked to perch on the yards of sailing ships where, because it had few predators and no fear, sailors could approach near enough to easily catch it. this led spanish seamen to call it bobada (stupid) and the word was adopted into english as both the name of the bird and slang for a fool. the bird’s puffed out chest also reminded sex-starved seamen of a woman’s breasts, which they colloquially called boobs. all three terms found their way into common usage.
