Know the ropes, английский
  1. A sailor who `knows the ropes` is familiar with the miles of cordage and ropes involved in running a ship.

  2. This phrase, today meaning to completely understand a business or operation, started out meaning to know only the bare minimum. one of the first things a novice seaman had to learn was the names and locations of all the complex running and standing rigging (i.e., the ropes). this was no simple task, as he had to be able to find and identify every line and block on a dark and moonless night, but even when he knew all that, he still had a great deal more to learn before being rated “able.”

Jack tar, английский
  1. A sailor dressed in `square rig` with square collar. formerly with a tarred pigtail.

  2. A seaman (see tarpaulin).
