- An officer placed by royal commission in command of a fortress, town, or colony. governors are also appointed to institutions, hospitals, and other establishments. also, a revolving bifurcate pendulum, with two iron balls, whose centrifugal divergence equalizes the motion of the steam-engine.

- A device that limits the maximum speed of an engine. mainly found on diesel engines to prevent mechanical damage or operation at speeds that would give rise to unacceptable smoke emission,
- Generic term for limiting or monitoring device as in "speed governor" or air pressure governor, more often the latter. pressure governors are used to monitor the rise or fall of air pressure to operate systems or give warnings. compressor governors are used to automatically control compressors running between predefined air pressure settings to ensure air supplies are maintained. a brake pipe governor may be used to switch off power control automatically if the brake pipe is discharged, initiating an emergency brake application. speed governors perform the usual functions in a diesel engine control system.

- A machine driven by the reactive force of a gas or liquid flowing through blades or vanes attached to a rotor. in marine service, steam or gas turbines are used as main propulsion systems and also for auxiliary purposes such as electrical generation. turbo-blower: a device used to complete the evacuation of a submarine’s ballast tanks after the boat has surfaced. colloquially, “blower.” turbo-electric: a propulsion system consisting of a turbine connected to a generator whose electricity powers the propellers.

- Equipment that converts the kinetic energy of a fl ow of air, water, hot gas or steam into rotary mechanical power, used for direct drive or electricity generation (see wind, hydro, gas or steam turbines). condensing steam turbines exhaust depleted steam in a heat exchanger (called condenser) using ambient cooling from water (river, lake, sea) or air sources (cooling towers). a backpressure steam turbine has no condenser at ambient temperature conditions, but exhausts all steam at higher temperatures for use in particular heat end-uses. united nations framework convention on climate change (unfccc): the convention was adopted on may in new york and signed at the earth summit in rio de janeiro by more than countries and the european economic community. its ultimate objective is the “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”. it contains commitments for all parties. under the convention, parties included in annex i aimed to return greenhouse gas emissions not controlled by the montreal protocol to levels by the year . the convention came into force in march . in , the unfccc adopted the kyoto protocol. see also annex i countries, annex b countries and kyoto protocol.
