In the summer of 1781, british troops under lord charles cornwallis were at yorktown, virginia, awaiting ocean transport to new york city where sir henry clinton‘s army was threatened by franco-american forces led by george washington and jean-baptiste de rochambeau. another french force under marie-joseph de lafayette was observing cornwallis from south of yorktown. recognizing the strategic possibility of defeating the british in detail, washington sent a french frigate to ask contre-amiral francois de grasse to sail from the west indies and seize control of chesapeake bay before british warships could arrive. leaving a small force to contain clinton, the combined forces moved toward yorktown, first by forced march and then by sea in french transports. on 30th august, de grasse arrived in the chesapeake with twenty-seven ships of the line and debarked 3,000 reinforcements for lafayette. on 5th september, rear-admiral thomas graves with nineteen of the line arrived off hampton roads. de grasse sallied to meet graves with twenty-four of his ships and the fleets fought an inconclusive two-hour action off the virginia capes. they maneuvered at sea for another four days, during which eight french ships of the line under commodore paul de barras slipped into the chesapeake convoying transports carrying washington’s siege artillery. when graves followed de grasse back to the bay, he found his nineteen ships, many of which had battle damage, facing thirty-five of the line. he wisely decided to return to new york to refit. although itself indecisive, this engagement—also known as the battle of chesapeake bay—was pivotal because it ensured success for the american revolution. cornwallis surrendered after a three-week siege, leading britain to recognize united states independence.
