A conceptual ball of infinite radius, concentric with the earth, and rotating around an axis aligned with the terrestrial poles. this imaginary sphere is bisected by a projection of the earth’s equator into space, dividing it into north and south celestial hemispheres. all heavenly bodies, no matter how distant, can then be thought of as lying on the sphere, allowing astronomers to keep track of the sky despite the earth’s constant movement.
