- A tank in which liquid is stored until particles suspended in the liquid sink to the bottom.
- A temporary holding tank in which oil-contaminated water is allowed to separate into its component parts, after which the oil is transferred to fuel bunkers and the water is discharged to a bilge or holding tank.
- A reservoir or tank into which the return water from a borehole collects and the entrained drill cuttings settle.
