- Extremely hard material which emery is made.
- A hard, abrasive mineral, principally aluminum oxide, applied to a surface to make it non-slippery; for example, on the walking surface of a ramp.
- Aluminum oxide, a mineral, al-oa. the colored and clear varieties form the gems sapphire and ruby; the granular impure variety is called emery and sometimes is used as a substitute for chilled steel shot in drilling small-diameter holes.
