- That portion of the sea up to a limited instance which is immediately adjacent to the shores of any country and over which the sovereignty and exclusive jurisdiction of that country extend.
- According to the un convention on law of the sea the sovereignty of a coastal state extends beyond its land and internal waters across an adjacent belt of sea up to a limit not exceeding 12 nautical miles (22.2 kilometers) from the baseline. this sovereignty includes the airspace over the sea as well as to its bed and subsoil. in territorial seas, submarines and other underwater vehicles are required to navigate on the surface showing their national flag. some states have unilaterally claimed limits of up to 200 nautical miles. also called “territorial sea.”
