- A naval aviator who directs landings on a usn aircraft carrier. (the rn originally called this job deck landing control officer, now it is air traffic controller.) from the 1920s until after world war ii, lso’s used colored paddles to control the approach and touch-down of airplanes (hence the colloquialism “batsman”). their signals gave pilots information on lining-up with the flight deck, height relative to the proper glide slope, airspeed (fast or slow), and whether tailhook and wheels were down. the final signal was a slashing motion at the throat ordering the pilot to reduce power and land. lso signals were mostly advisory in the u.s. navy, but usually mandatory in the royal navy. hence, when “crossdecking” they had to agree on which system
