One of twenty-four ring-shaped bones which link together to form the backbone. see illustration at cartilaginous joint in supplement (note: the plural is vertebrae.) comment: the top vertebra (the atlas) supports the skull; the first seven vertebrae in the neck are the cervical vertebrae; then follow the twelve thoracic or dorsal vertebrae which are behind the chest and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower part of the back. the sacrum and coccyx are formed of five sacral vertebrae and four coccygeal vertebrae which have fused together.
