- The part of the central nervous system situated inside the skull. also called encephalon. see illustration at brain in supplement comment: the main part of the brain is the cerebrum, formed of two sections or hemi- brain covering 50 spheres, which relate to thought and to sensations from either side of the body. at the back of the head and beneath the cerebrum is the cerebellum which coordinates muscle reaction and balance. also in the brain are the hypothalamus which governs body temperature, hunger, thirst and sexual urges, and the tiny pituitary gland which is the most important endocrine gland in the body.

A section of the hindbrain, located at the back of the head beneath the back part of the cerebrum. see illustration at brain in supplement comment: the cerebellum is formed of two hemispheres with the vermis in the centre. fibres go into or out of the cerebellum through the peduncles. the cerebellum is the part of the brain where voluntary movements are coordinated and is associated with the sense of balance.
