- The process of assigning a set of records from a database (observations in a dataset) into (usually) one of ``small" number of pre-specified disjoint categories. related techniques include regression, which predicts a range of values and clustering, which (typically) allows the categories to form themselves. the classification can be "fuzzy" in several senses of the word. in usual sense, the classification technique can allow a single record to belong to multiple (disjoint) categories with a probability (estimated) of being in each class. the categories can also overlap when they are developed either through a hierarchical model or through an agglomerative technique. finally, the classification can be fuzzy in the sense of using "fuzzy logic" techniques. see also: clustering, fuzzy logic, regression. classification and regression trees (cart) classification and regression trees (cart) is a particular form of decision tree used in data mining and statistics.

- Association of two or more person (individuals or companies) formed for the purpose of making a profit. a partnership can be a general partnership or a limited partnership depending on the extent of each party`s liability. a general partnership is characterized by the unlimited liability of the general partners for partnership debts. also see: limited partnership.

In the 46 years prior to the great fire of 1836, the united states government had issued about 10,000 patents. most of these could never be revived again, but congress acted to restore those records that could be reconstructed from private files and reproduce models which were deemed critical. patents whose records were not restored were cancelled. there were a total of 2,845 patents restored, most of which were eventually given a number beginning with "x." all patents after the date of the establishment of the patent office in july 1836 were numbered as a new series (without the x), beginning with a new patent no. 1 to john ruggles. a small number of the new series patents had been destroyed in the great fire but they were quickly recovered from their owners` records. x files bear numbers that range from x000001 to x011280. x0000001 is the first patent, issued to samuel hopkins in 1790.
