- A colourless gas produced by the body’s metabolism as the tissues burn carbon, and breathed out by the lungs as waste (note: the chemical symbol is co2.) comment: carbon dioxide can be solidified at low temperatures and is known as ‘dry ice’ or ‘carbon dioxide snow’, being used to remove growths on the skin.
