- A raised shelf created by dumping spoil from a nearby channel. spoil the ship for a ha’porth of tar: this phrase today means endangering an enterprise by skimping or neglecting minor details. it is popularly believed to refer to caulking the seams of a ship, where failure to fill a tiny strip (even one short enough to be covered by a half-penny’s worth of pitch) could result in a fatal leak. however, the adage predates england’s maritime age. in rural medieval dialect, “sheep” was pronounced “ship,” and the allusion is to the shepherd’s practice of smearing tar on an animal’s wounds to promote healing and prevent infection.
