A pilot case based reasoning (cbr) developed and tested at microsoft in the mid-1990s. it addressed issues involved in setting up microsoft windows nt 3.1 and, in a second version, addressed support issues for microsoft word on the macintosh. in tests, the aladdin system was found to allow support engineers to provide support in areas for which they had little or no training. see also: case based reasoning.

A path matrix can be used to determine the shortest path between two nodes in a graph. the path matrix has a zero in the i, j-th cell if the shortest (cheapest) path between node i and node j is a direct arc, an integer specifying some other node k if the shortest path passes through k, and some inadmissible value if there is no path between i and j (i.e., the graph is not connected). see also: adjacency matrix. pathology expert interpretative reporting system (piers) piers is an expert system that adds interpretative comments to automatically generated pathology reports. it uses ripple down rules to allow pathologists to update the rule base and has been in service since 1991. see also: ripple down rules, http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~s2176432/about.html
