Taku, английский
During the early twentieth century, the british, french, german, and russian navies each had a destroyer named taku. this unusual coincidence came about as a result of the third china war, commonly known as the boxer rebellion. a nationalist chinese secret society, the righteous harmonious fists (called “boxers” by foreigners), mounted an insurgency against foreign occupation. rape, pillage, and murder spread rapidly, and the international settlements at tientsin and peking (now beijing) came under siege. an international relief force of austrian, british, french, german, italian, japanese, russian, and united states warships gathered offshore, but was held up by chinese batteries in the taku forts guarding the hai river estuary. on 17th june 1900, nine shallow-draft warships were detached from the main fleet under the command of lieutenant-commander roger keyes (later admiral lord keyes of zeebrugge and dover) to storm the forts with naval infantry. four chinese destroyers were captured and allotted to the navies mentioned above, each being re-named taku.
