The somers incident, английский
After being dismissed from university during his freshman year, philip spencer, son of the secretary of war, obtained an appointment as acting midshipman aboard the frigate uss john adams, but was soon forced to resign, charged with dereliction of duty and drunkenness. perhaps due to his father’s political influence, he was reinstated and assigned to the brig uss somers, commander alexander mackenzie. in september 1842, somers set sail on a training mission carrying a large number of volunteer apprentices (young officer candidates sent directly aboard for hands-on training). during the voyage an informant reported that spencer had approached some of the crew saying he had a fancy to seize the brig, sail her to the caribbean and become a pirate. mackenzie confronted the 18 year old who tried to pass it off as a joke, but the captain ordered him chained hand and foot on the quarterdeck where the officer of the deck could keep him under observation. next day a topmast crashed to the deck, and mackenzie labeled it an act of sabotage by supporters of spencer’s potential mutiny. although there was no evidence against them, he had spencer’s friends boatswain’s mate samuel cromwell and seaman elisha small arrested and put in irons. he then noticed the crew exchanging “suspicious glances”—which may have been due to fear and confusion—so ordered his officers to arm themselves and issue pistols and cutlasses to the petty officers. on 30th november, the brig’s officers were ordered to assemble in the wardroom. no formal court-martial was held; the three defendants were not present, nor were they informed they were being tried. thirteen witnesses were called, but none gave any concrete evidence, except the original informant and he only mentioned spencer. however, according to the brig’s log, the officers ruled that all three “were decidedly guilty, and that the safety of the vessel required that they be immediately put to death.” spencer insisted cromwell and small were innocent, but mackenzie ordered the executions carried out. the corpses hung at the yardarms all afternoon, but after dinner, were cut down and buried at sea. somers reached new york city 13 days later, and the incident created an instantaneous adverse reaction. in a pamphlet entitled “the cruise of the somers,” famous author and naval historian james fenimore cooper charged that mackenzie, “in an hysterically paranoid state of mind,” had executed three innocent men for a mutiny that existed only in his own snug 298 unbalanced mind. a naval court of inquiry exonerated the commander, but—fearing spencer’s influential family might lay charges for murder in civilian court—he requested and was granted a full courtmartial. on 31st march 1843, the court handed down
