Sindbad the sailor, английский
This principal character in 1001 arabian nights is not actually a seaman, but a baghdad merchant who acquires great wealth by going on seven adventurous and miraculous voyages. • on the first, his ship’s crew goes ashore and lights a fire, but the island turns out to be a giant whale, which sounds, leaving them floundering in the water. • on the second, he encounters rocs—birds so powerful that they can lift an elephant—and steals their stash of diamonds. • during his third voyage, sindbad is kidnapped by dwarfs, almost eaten by a cyclops, and attacked by an immense serpent. • on the fourth, he escapes from cannibals, marries a king’s daughter, and barely escapes being buried alive when she dies. • fantastic adventures continue on the fifth voyage, when his ship is sunk by vengeful rocs who divebomb it with boulders. thrown into the water, he barely escapes being strangled by sheik-al-bahr (the old man of the sea) who clings to his back and can only be shaken off after sindbad makes him drunk. • on his penultimate voyage, sindbad is shipwrecked on an barren island, but builds a raft and sails away down a subterranean river to the fabulous country of sarandib (see serendipity), whose king bestows great riches on him and sends gifts to the caliph. • finally, the caliph sends the traveler back to sarandib with thanks and greetings, but he is captured by pirates and sold as a slave to an ivory merchant. however, he locates the fabled “elephant’s graveyard,” finds a mountain of tusks, buys his freedom, and returns to baghdad wealthier than ever.
