When a british or united states warship is at anchor or on moorings it flies its national ensign on the flagstaff (ensign staff ) at the stern and its union jack on the jackstaff at the prow. as soon as the ship gets under way, both are struck while a sailing (or steaming) ensign is simultaneously hoisted to the gaff (a spar projecting diagonally from the mainmast). the ensign is struck when out of sight of land, but raised to the gaff when falling in with other ships, cruising near land, or going into battle. the switch from one configuration to the other is known as “shifting colors.” the practice began in the late 18th century, when a loose-footed spanker sail on the mizzenmast was replaced by a gaffsail whose horizontal boom projected beyond the taffrail. this spar would have broken the ensign staff when it swung, so the latter was struck when getting under way. the practice continued in the usn as a matter of custom long after the practical need disappeared. colors are also switched in the rn, but nowadays in a slightly different manner. in peacetime, only the jack is struck when getting under way. with no gaffsail boom to worry about, the ensign normally remains on the ensign staff while at sea, only being switched to the gaff in wartime, during foul weather, or when clearing for action. however, if the ship has a helicopter landing pad or asw mortars on its stern an ensign staff would impede their operation. in this case, colors are switched and the ensign staff is struck as soon as the vessel is under way.
