The ancient greeks believed that the river of oceanus rose in the underworld and flowed in a great circle all around the earth (to them europe and asia minor). the name stuck to waters beyond the pillars of hercules (strait of gibraltar), and hence christopher columbus was named admiral of the ocean sea (atlantic).
