One of the earliest sea-dwelling deities was this ancient sumerian god, whose head and body were entirely fish, but had human feet emerging from under his tail, and a man’s head which spoke with a human voice sitting on top of his fish head. according to legend he brought civilization to humankind at the beginning of the ages, and since then has risen from the sea every morning to give any who would listen the benefit of his deep wisdom. in the beginning he taught humans how to use writing and devise laws; how to develop arts and sciences; how to build boats and construct cities; how to establish temples; and how to distinguish the seeds of the earth and harvest their fruits. according to babylonian priest berossus, “from that time to this nothing material has been added by way of improvement to his instructions.”
