    And some of the crew shall be appointed to attend to and serve them and to keep the place clean. the cooper shall make buckets with covers and cradles if necessary for their use. • the usn medical corps: surgeons became commissioned officers in 1872, but it was not until 1898 that this staff corps was founded, covering a wide range of medical specialties. a century later, facing a shortage of trained physicians, the uniformed services health professions revitalization act (1972) created programs under which medical students are given reserve commissions as ensign (o- 1) which they hold during four years of medical education. upon graduation, they supersede to the rank of lieutenant (o-3) and are called to active duty as interns at a navy or marine corps hospital. after a year’s internship, they may deploy to the fleet as a general medical officer, undergo six months of additional training as a flight surgeon or undersea medical officer, or apply to complete a full residency in the field of their choice. see hospital corpsman. • the royal navy medical service operates in very similar ways. medical, dental and nursing officers and medical assistants work in primary and secondary health care, ashore and afloat. experienced doctors enter on short service commissions of three to six years’ duration (prior experience being considered when calculating seniority). undergraduate cadetships are available to medical students, paying a salary as well as course fees. during three 197 medical months at the institute of naval medicine (gosport) qualified physicians learn to manage clinical problems in the absence of hospital or specialist assistance, and are introduced to the fundamentals of aviation and underwater medicine. they can then elect to serve as generalists at sea, qualify in aviation or submarine medicine, or undertake further professional training in a specialist field.
