Juvenile punishment, английский
A document in the british museum recounts the treatment of young boys in the elizabethan navy: petty pilferings and commissiones of that kinde ... were generallie punished with the whippe, the offender beinge to that purpose bounde faste to the capstan; and the waggerie and idlenesse of ship boys paid by the boatswayne with a rodde, and commonlie this execution is done upon mondaye morninges, and ... some meere seamen and saylers doe believe ... that they shalle never have a faire winde until the poor boyes be duly brought to the chest; that is, whipped every mondaye morninge. for minor disciplinary infractions, boys of all social backgrounds were later subjected to bare-bottom beatings, latterly with a cane, but originally with a teaser or bimmy—an eighteen-inch length of rope, knotted at the “receiving end” and dipped in hot tar for stiffness. as reported by s. humphries in hooligans or rebels? an oral history of working class childhood and youth 1889–1939 (blackwell 1981), such punishment was readily accepted by upper-class youths who had attended “public” (elite private) schools, but resented by those with little or no formal education: the most determined resistance ... occurred when boys refused to remove their trousers to be beaten on their bare bottoms ... although these ritual humiliations were for many years an integral part of public school life ... working-class ... children were resolute in their resistance ... would stoically endure traditional punishments of the sort their parents might inflict but refused to submit to the more degrading disciplinary measures. more serious juvenile offenders received full-scale flogging as their summary punishment, but with a light five-tailed whip, known as the “pussy-cat” and reserved for use on youths. however, if the punishment had been awarded by a court-martial use of the “adult” cat-o’-nine-tails was mandatory. many boys felt this to be a “badge of honor.” k
